History of BITS Pilani

Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. (B.I.T.S Pilani)

BITS was founded by Ghanshyam Das Birla in 1929 as an intermediate college. During World War Second, the Govt. of India established a technical training center in Pilani to train technicians for Defence services and industry. It was converted In 1946 into the Birla Engineering College with degree programs in electrical and mechanical engineering. The college was set up with very limited infrastructure. Professor V Lakshminarayan took charge of Vice Principal, Birla College of Engineering in 1946. Masters program in Electronics began in 1955.


BITS Pilani University- In 1964, the Birla Colleges of Arts, Commerce, Engineering, Pharmacy and Science were merged to form the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) with Dr. G.D. Birla as the founder chairman. Professor V Lakshminarayan played an important role in the integration of three colleges. In this period of inception (especially during 1964–1970), BITS Pilani received support from the Ford Foundation. This help was intended to make BITS an innovator in the field of technology and science. It also reflected the Foundation's mission to financially aid the cause of knowledge building and the development of organizations. The Ford Foundation also supported an alliance between BITS and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (During 1964-1970). The faculty members at MIT helped to reshape the curriculum at BITS. BITS Pilani became a Deemed University established vide Sec.3 of the UGC Act,1956 under notification No. F.12-23/63.U-2 of June 18, 1964.


B.I.T.S. Pilani-is an Institution declared as Deemed to be University under Sec. 3 of the UGC Act and features in the world map as a renowned science and technology institute. It is located in Pilani, Rajasthan, India. In addition to Pilani, BITS has campuses in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Goa, India and Hyderabad, India and an extension center in Bangalore, India. BITS Pilani is well known for its flexible academic structure and the institute's policy of admission purely on the basis of merit and not through any kind of reservations. The institute is privately supported and fully residential. BITS Pilani is the first Indian institution to set up a campus outside India.

During the early years of its inception i.e., 1964 to 1970, the Institute had the advantage of having collaboration with MIT (USA), with the help of Ford Foundation Grant. Besides adopting semester system, modular course structure, continuous & internal evaluation, letter grading, etc., the Institute created institutionalized linkages with industries in terms of Practice School and introduced several flexibilities such as dual degree, transfer, etc., in its educational process. In addition, Work Integrated Learning programs leading to various degrees are also conducted for employed professionals.

BITS Pilani Campus

Campus Highlights-Pilani is located 220 KM West to Delhi and 217 KM North to Jaipur and BITS campus is located to the south of the bus stand of Pilani Town. The total area of the campus (which includes land of Birla Education Trust) is over 4.04 KM2 (1000 acre), but the BITS campus (also called Vidya Vihar Campus) is spread across 1.327 KM2 (328 acre). The build up area of BITS is 0.2 KM2 (49.421 acre)of which 60769 M2 is used for the BITS buildings. The campus has several class rooms (area 11245 M2), laboratories (area 7069 M2). Plenty of open space is available in the campus. The two main grounds are called Central Lawn and Gym-Ground. The campus is well connected with roads built of length 12 KM.


Chancellor and Academic Head-BITS Pilani has a tradition of long-serving Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors. Its founder Mr. G.D. Birla was the Chancellor since inception until his demise in 1983. He was followed by his son Dr. Krishna Kumar Birla, who was the Chancellor until his death in 2008. Currently Mr. Kumar Mangalam Birla is the Chancellor and Mrs. Shobhana Bhartia is the Pro-Chancellor. The first academic head of the institution (initally known as 'Principal') was Dr. V. Lakshminarayanan who served in this capacity from 1946 to 1969. He was succeed by BITS Directors Dr. C.R. Mitra (1969-1989) and Dr. S. Venkateswaran (1989-2006). With the opening of multiple campuses, the overall head came to be known as 'Vice Chancellor', while 'Director' denoted the head of a campus. Currently, Dr. L.K. Maheshwari is the Vice Chancellor and the fourth academic head of the institute since its inception
